The Wattisham Airfield has played a vital part in the history of RAF Wattisham, and the rich museum collection we have made available to our visitors reflects this fact really well. The original opening of the field took place in April 1939. The Royal Air Force used it as one of its main bases of operation in the first years of World War II.

Built in 1938 as a medium bomber station with a grass airfield, Wattisham was occupied by the RAF until handed over to the Eighth Air Force in September 1942. Wattisham airfield is situated in the heart of rural Suffolk, less than 10 miles north west of the county town of Ipswich. It has it's own dedicated Low Fly Area (LFA10) nearby to allow the resident (and other) units to train realistically at low level with the minimum of disruption to the local population and environment.
