Paint the shadows. Painting the shadows correctly are critical as they indicate the height of one petal off the other. It is in fact your shadows that indicate light in your painting. Without these shadows your rose will look dull and lifeless. In general you will find that the outside edge of your petal will be light.

When this part is dry I then start with the next layer and use now the colours for the rose. In this rose there are mixes of yellow and red and also some blue for the darkest parts. I begin painting the flower from the center outwards using a medium strength mixture of quinacridone rose. (You'll find a list of all the colors I used for this painting below). I applied my first brush marks to the inner folds of the petals where they are darkest in tone, then using a rinsed and blotted brush, I blended the color outwards to become lighter at the tips.
