Hi folks,
I'm looking for a camera for my first foray into medium format. I've got about £200 ($280) to spend as a birthday present from the folks.

The Mamiya C330 is a beautiful camera. It does not need batteries: it is a fully mechanical intelligent beauty. The Mamiya C330 Professional was fabricated in the late 60s and early 70s. The slightly upgraded versions of this camera, the C330f and C330s, were built until the early 1990s.

A jack of all trades and a master of one: Mamiya C330 vs. Rolleiflex 2.8E (Updated 2/1/2012) I love Twin Lens Reflex Cameras. I really do. There is something very special about them. My love for these cameras started when I was young. My Father had a Yashica Mat 124. It was cool in every way.

I have owned Mamiya's TLRs since the early 70s (C3, C220), and still have a C330f. I also have a Rolleiflex with 2.8 lens and Rolleicord. The Rolleicord is a lighter camera than either the C330 or the Rolleiflex. The C330 and Rolleiflex viewing screens are similar, both of them are brighter than the Rolleicord.

In this installment of Lomopedia, we visit the Mamiya C330 twin lens reflex camera. It's undoubtedly one of the most successful TLRs in Mamiya's line and is considered as a strong competitor against Rolleiflex TLRs. What made it a rival to the well known Rolleis is a mix of good build quality, useful features, and the ability to use.

This camera, for actual practical purposes, is above the Rolleiflex in every sense. Yes, a Sonnar-equipped Rolleiflex will score higher in lines-per-mm compared to a Mamiya with the 80mm lens, but there is more to image quality: color rendition and bokeh are smooth on the Mamiya-Sekor lens. Sharpness is good enough.

The Flex C Professional was the beginning of a long line of Mamiya interchangeable lens 6x6cm TLRs that developed into two lines - the C3 series and the lower-priced C2 series - and remained in production until 1995, a total span of 47 years. The last of-the-line C330 Professional S was introduced in 1983.

There were a few obvious choices: a Yashica Mat-124G, a Mamiya C330, and, of course, some flavor of Rolleiflex. (As you can see in the photo, all three have since joined the family.) At the time, I wasn't as familiar with the options for sourcing used gear, and searching the places I did know about unearthed not a single TLR of any kind.

The original model was just called a Mamiyaflex C. It was released in 1957. I've personally never seen one. When they started tweaking this camera, they broke off into two models; the C2 and the C3. While I may have been able to afford a Rolleicord, (as opposed to a Rolleiflex), the Mamiya C330 actually had more features.

I've also used both (Rolleiflex 3.5F and Mamiya C330). The build quality of the Mamiya is best decribed as functional - it gets the job done but is nowhere near the smoothness of the Rollei. Optically, too, the Mamiya lenses did the job, though some were better than others. but the Rollei's Zeiss (or Schneider) lenses certainly had the edge.

Based on the landmark Rolleiflex Automat of 1937, it features fully automatic first frame positioning, effective parallax compensation over the entire focusing range, a single stroke film wind crank with auto frame counting, ergonomic aperture and shutter speed wheels nestled in between the sides of the viewing and taking lenses, and a well plac.
