Monet was totally smitten with the area. He fell under the spell of Antibes old town, the sparkling coastline and and the surrounding lush landscapes.

Pins, cap d'Antibes is part of a group of nearly forty landscapes that Monet painted during a trip to the French Riviera in the opening months of 1888. The voyage was the third that the artist had taken to the region. He first ventured there with Renoir for two weeks in December 1883, traveling along the coast around Monaco (see lot 34), and then returned on his own for the first three months.

He began to focus on a single, isolated motif, the better to record the changes in color and light wrought on it by different times of day and fluctuations in weather. From January to May 1888, Claude Monet spent four months in Antibesโ€”a painting excursion in which he produced 39 compositions. His return to the sunny Riviera was probably inspired by the success of his first extended painting campaign on the Mediterranean, when he had visited the northern Italian city of Bordighera in 1884.

Starting in early spring 1888, Monet spent several months painting in Antibes, in the south of France. He struggled with ever-changing weather conditions, but worked hard to convey the transitory effects of light and wind. Here, Monet captured the intensity of Mediterranean light and colour by using strongly contrasting colours.
