Having much in common with the SAAB 96, the Sonett III shares many of that model's foibles, not the least of which is corrosion (there's that word again). Of course, the Sonett has a fiberglass body, which doesn't rust, but the floorpans and inner body structure do.

The Saab Sonett was never going to be mainstream. For that matter, even Saab sedans were a bit on the edges of the automotive landscape back then, but the cobbled-up Sonett, with its fiberglass body on a Saab 95 chassis, really did have a kit-car feel to it. That only got exacerbated when its little two-stroke engine was replaced by the taller.

The Saab Sonett was designed for the US market, and from 1970 until 1974 8368 cars of this type were built. The Sonett is a GRP bodied lightweight (830 kg empty) sports car based on the Saab 96 V4 floor pan.
