Rock Climbing Just west of Heckscher Playground is Umpire Rock - or, as it is known to climbers, Rat Rock. This is the bouldering center of Central Park and draws thousands of rock climbers every year. The climbing surface consists to two separate faces on a very large boulder and features the most popular and difficult climbing in the park.

The view from the top of the rock is particularly stunning during the fall when the leaves on the trees surrounding the lake turn a beautiful array of colors. One of the best ways to experience Umpire Rock and the surrounding areas is through a bike or pedicab tour of Central Park. These tours will take you through the park's many hidden gems.

One of the most impressive glacial remnants in Central Park is Umpire Rock (so called thanks to its proximity south of the Heckscher Ballfields), to the east of West 62nd Street, by the pétanque.

Rat Rock, also known as Umpire Rock, is an outcrop of Manhattan schist which protrudes from the bedrock in Central Park, Manhattan, New York City. It is named after the rats that used to swarm there at night. It is located near the southwest corner of the park, south of the Heckscher Ballfields near the alignments of 62nd Street and Seventh Avenue.

Umpire (Rat) Rock in Central Park Went down to Manhattan yesterday with the family to visit my brother-in-law. Personally, I think he's certifiably insane since he gave up a nice house in Redmond, Washington and a good job at Microsoft to go live in a tiny one-bedroom apartment on the West Side and work at Morgan Stanley.
