St. Simon was foaled in 1881 at William Barrow's Paddocks near Newmarket, the offspring of a stallion named Galopin and his mate, St. Angela, by King Tom. Galopin had been purchased as a yearling in 1873 by the Hungarian Prince Gustavus Batthyany from breeder William Blenkiron's Middle Park Stud.
