I found that if you right click the optifine file you downloaded, get it to extract to your desktop, then you can put the optifine-MOD file into your mods directory, and it works normally from there. I've also seen reports that for 1.12.2 that specifically D2 is better for less random crashes. Hope I could be of some help!
